Home Server 2011 Windows 10

Forum discussion: Anyone here succeeded in using WHS 2011 to back up a Windows 10 client? Backups just don't work, with no real clue why. My guess is that it's related to VSS support on the client.

Windows Server For Home

Archived

Hi,

I've been using a copy of WHS 2011 I got for really cheap on Newegg a few years ago. The server still works fine but WHS 2011 is no longer support so it would be time for me to replace it I guess.

Windows Home Server 2011 Windows 10

I have two options in mind :

  1. Windows 10

  2. Windows Server 2016 Essentials

(No, not Linux, sorry)

Windows server for home

I suppose Server 2016 would be the logical choice, however since it's for home use, I have read I may have to deal with some stuff I have absolutely no use for (like creating a domain). I have read it was possible to disable the domain stuff with Server 2012 but I haven't found the same information about 2016. Server 2016 is also more expensive...

Windows 10 would be cheaper but I'm worried about the automatic reboot to install updates. (It is not a problem for me on my laptops or my desktop computers running Win 10, I never attempted to disable the updates).

Here's what I do on the server right now :

  • Plex Server

  • Virtual Box (running 2 small Linux virtual machines)

  • FTP Server that is used only by my network printer to save scans

  • A tool to update my domain name settings if my public IP changes (used for a small web site I'm hosting in one of the Linux VMs)

  • Windows File Sharing : 2x 3 TB hard drives that are mirrored in Windows Disk Management for redundancy and shared over the network. It is mainly used to store backups of the important files on my 3 computers/laptop. I also save recordings of 2 Windows Media Center PCs there but they are not critical...

  • Microsoft One Drive to make an online backup of my important files.

I do plan to stay with Microsoft OneDrive service by the way. To make it short, I had 2 bad experiences with only file storages companies that closed after a little over a year... I'm staying with a big name that is less likely to go away for now (and I got Office 365 too for about the same price I paid, which is a nice bonus to me)

What would you guys suggest?

Thank you

Edit : after reading your comments and a little more information on the web, I decided it would be better going with Server 2016. I am aware of a subreddit where we can buy 'working keys' for quite cheap but I know it's not 100% legal since these keys shouldn't be resold from what I understand. At $30 The price is tempting when compared to the $500 price I found online for a fully legal copy. Are there any other less expensive options that would still be legal?

I'm trying to install Windows Home Server 2011 (WHS 2011) in a VM in Hyper-V on Windows 10 (upgraded from Windows 8/8.1). I can't seem to get it working. It looks like you have to use Generation 1, and it makes it all the way through the Server 2008 part of the install, but fails after the first real boot. It loads up explorer and then attempts to load the WHS 2011-specific setup stuff, but fails every time like this:

I've tried looking through the logs it generates but haven't found anything that sticks out as a problem (there's a lot of stuff in there). I have recreated the problem four times now with various guest machine settings.

Has anyone successfully installed WHS 2011 on Windows 10 Hyper-V or encountered this WHS 2011 issue and found some way to overcome it?

Will Windows Home Server 2011 Work With Windows 10

Given the status of this question as a tumbleweed, I suspect that the number of people using WHS 2011 must be extraordinarily low. I happened to not need the special features of WHS 2011, so I was able to bring up the task manager, start regedit, and remove the WHS setup from startup and get the system into a workable state. For now this is the best option I can find. If anyone else finds a way to solve the problem completely and retain the WHS-specific features, I'll switch my acceptance to them.

Home Server 2011 Windows 10 Update

I had the same problem. Tried a million combinations, but here's what worked:

  • Use a Legacy Network Adapter (this may / may not be required)
  • Disable Dynamic Memory
  • During install, choose to NEVER CHECK FOR UPDATES

That last one is what really tripped me up. The installer / server config process automatically runs a bunch of windows updates, one of which eventually fails, and the whole thing ends up lost, eventually putting up that failures screen.

Is Windows Home Server 2011 Compatible With Windows 10

After successfully getting through the server configuration, you can enable updates and start that very exciting multi-hour windows update application. First round will fail, but works after attempting again. Make sure to keep checking for more updates until you get a clean scan.
